BEST THINGS TO SEE IN EDINBURGH

OLD TOWN

After waiting for a few years (5 actually), I finally managed to fly to Edinburgh !! Only for 2 full days, but it must have been the best 2 days of the year so far ❤️I’ve met with one of my friend for one day. We started the day by the one and only The Vennel viewpoint. I always found it crazy how suddenly certain places have become really famous thanks or because of social media but most instagram ! When I used to live here 10 years ago, we knew this places but didn’t make such a big deal of it ! Anyway, I guess I’m getting old ! So, this view point is a really nice view of the Castle. You can then walk you way donw to the Grassmarket. Such a nice square with restaurants and shops. If you’re one of these people that don’t mind having an ice creeam on a cold day, then check out Mary’s Milk Bar. Even though it was a nice day, it was really cold because of the wind. My friend got an ice cream but I didn’t. The interior of shop is soo cute, they even sell pins.

We then head towards the iconic Victoria Street ! I love that street, with the colorful buildings and the shops. One of them is …. Nope, I’m not going to talk about the Happy Potter shop (because years ago, it used to be a nice shop, with vintage stuff, now it’s all about attracting tourists… And, you even have to queue to get in when it’s busy). Anyway oncemore, I’m talking about the shop right next door, The red door gallery. It is a shop where you can find a big selection of British and Scottish artists and illustrators. I obviously bought loads of postcards and a tote bag. You can also find stickers, posters, tea towels, pottery and so much more ! Really recommand this place if you’re into art.

You can then carry on up the street, then there are stairs where you can see the street from above and get a nice view. There are also bars if you want to enjoy the view from there. We then went to the Edinburgh Castle. I forgot how busy it gets here ! But such a nice place and view from up there. I already visited the castle, so didn’t go this time but there is a little cabin a bit before the castle where you can buy tickets. We walked the way down on to The Royal Mile. Which gets its name because it’s from Edinburgh Castle to the Holyrood Palace, where the Queen used to stay when she came to Scotland. During summer time, in August, this long road is full of stand up comedy shows with the Fringe Festival. It is also a great time to visit the city.

Once you arrived to the Palace, there is Holyrood Park and Arthur’s Seat. There are multiple roads to go up there and get several views of the town. I must admit I was a bit lazy and didn’t go to the famous top but got another easier and lower point which was high enough to get a good view of the city. I love this place, I used to go quite often, for lunch time before going to work or on a day off enjoying the sun (when it was there, not everyday !!) Beware of the windy but if it’s a nice day, it’s a beautiful place to have lunch or a picnic.

We then walked to Clerck Street to The Wee Boulangerie. The place where we used to work together with my friend. Such a lovely boulangerie. You will find the amazing french bread and obvisouly some cakes and patisseries (almond croissant, macaron or carrot cake…). It was so good to go back and see that it hasn’t changed much ! They also sell little pizzetas and cheesy bites, perfect for lunch 🙂

We were then a step away from the Meadows park. That’s one of the many reasons why I love this city so much, there’s nature and parks all around. We walked in Tills Bookshop. We both love books so we kind of have to get in! It ‘s such a nice little second-hand bookshop with a calm atmosphere. I wanted to stay there forever ! We then walked to New Town.

NEW TOWN

We walked passed in front of the National Gallery of Scotland . I was lucky enough to have 2 sunny days so I wanted to make the most of it. But if it’s a crapy day or it’s your first time in Edinburgh and you’re into Art, it’s definitly worth visiting. Plus the admission is free except for some exibitions.

We then head to Princes Street Garden where the statut Sott Monument stand proudly ! You can walk to the top of the statut if you’re brave enough to walk the 221 steps ! But the view is really good once you’re at the top ! I’ve actually never visited it. At the bottom of the garden you can see the beautiful Ross Fountain and get a nice shot with the Castle in the background ! We then walked up to stroll around Princes Street and get a coffee/tea at Waterstones Café. I used to go to Waterstones pretty much every week when I used to live there ! I love this bookshop, plus if you’re lucky enough to have space at the windows in the café, you have a nice view overlooking at the Castle !

To finish the day, what a better way to walk at the top of Calton Hill and watch the sunset (if it’s a nice day) ! Here is one of the best view of the city !

STOCKBRIDGRE

My friend got the train back to Glasgow sunday night so I started my day by having breakfast at my absolut favourit of my trip, the Books’n Cup coffee. I got a Breakfast tea with an almond croissant. Really cozy atmosphere and the decoration made me want to stay there the whole morning. The playlist sounded like it was made for me, and for a really long time, I felt like it’s where I belong… I eventually left the coffee shop to head to Stockbridge for Dean Village. This is one of these places again that got really busy with social media… I got my picture from the little bridge then walked towards Golden Hare Books. It’s an independant library with a selection of fiction, non fiction and children’s book. On the way there, I discovered the nice water of Leith walkway.

On the way back to the city center, I walked along Circus Ln. A really cute street where the houses are really low compare to the rest of the city which make you feel like you’re in a small village. At this point I wanted to head back to the city center to make the most of it and get all my memories back again. But if you’re in Stockbridge, The Royal Botanic Garden is such a nice place to walk around. You can see so many plants, flowers and also squirrels. They’re not so shy cause so many people feed them ^^ ( I was one of them back then).
